Louis Vuitton launches City Guide App with cocktail reception

Alicia Vikander Slays As Louis Vuitton's Brand Ambassador — PHOTOS

Awards season is going to be especially stylish this year — at least if Alicia Vikander's recent red carpet outings are any indication. Case in point? Well, the Swedish actress wore Louis Vuitton to the London premiere of The Danish Girl, and she pretty much crushed it. She donned an absolutely gorgeous deep blue strapless gown for the evening; the structured bodice was decorated with art deco-esque embellishments, and it was accompanied with a simple and striking floor-length satin column skirt. All in all, it was quite the red carpet triumph, perfectly mixing a touch of edginess with a whole lot of classic glam.

Oh, and the best part? This wasn't her first time stunning in LV this week — she also wore the brand to the British Independent Film Awards (where her film, Ex Machina, cleaned up). Again, she went for a strikingly simple silhouette — fashioned like a slip dress, the gown was embellished with tiny crystals, giving the dress a distinctly galactic feel (not unlike Lupita Nyong'o's recent LED-lit Made with Code x ZAC Zac Posen dress, actually). Taken together, the two Louis Vuitton gowns make her quite a winner in the brand ambassadorship category — let's take a look!

Gucci prints spur consumer artistic interpretation in Instagram series

Italian fashion label Gucci is speaking to the now immediate availability of art with an Instagram series that turns textiles into creative pieces.
#GucciGram asked visual artists to reinterpret the brand’s new Blooms and Caleido prints into works of art, which were then posted to Instagram for Gucci’s followers to view. Often, luxury brands have worked with artists on exhibits, but this social campaign makes the pieces accessible to a wider audience while also driving a conversation around the art.
Art online
#GucciGram was introduced with a post of all of the works submitted captioned with a quote from the label’s creative director Alessandro Michele. He says, “#GucciGram is a starting point to tell different stories, which are all united by great freedom. Today creativity is often born and finds its voice in digital media, a vital source of visual culture.”
Mr. Michele handpicked the artists included in the series, who include Spanish illustrator Ignasi Monreal, who made short films, and makeup artist Lyle Reimer, who took a selfie wearing a bag as a hat. Each piece of work is published with a lengthy caption explaining who the artist is, along with details on their inspiration and their medium.

Michele Momentum Means No Markdowns at Gucci

As Alessandro Michele is named International Fashion Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards, Gucci CEO Marco Bizzarri reveals why the designer’s first two collections will not be marked down.

Hoping for Gucci Markdowns? You’re Out of Luck

If you have your eye on those statement-making Gucci fur loafers, act now. The house's CEO, Marco Bizzarri, tells Business of Fashion that the designer's first two collections for the house — his men's and women's outings for fall 2015 — will not get marked down. Bizzarri explained that he wants to preserve the image of the brand and to give Michele's vision time to sink in: "I wanted to give the collection of Alessandro the longest-possible time at full price in the shop. It’s so new for our company; so new for him."
Luckily, it sounds like Michele's maximalist wares are selling like whatever the Italian equivalent of hotcakes is: "The full-price sell-through is super high, so even if I put themon sale now, the impact on sales would be tiny,” the CEO added. As for the cruise collection that is starting to hit stores now, that remains to be seen.

Sadly, Gucci Will Not Go on Sale This Holiday Season

And it's because people are already gladly paying full price for it.

Christie's to Auction Margaret Thatcher's Clothes, Handbags

Christie's is set to sell personal possessions of the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, including papers, mementos, clothes — and her iconic handbags.
The auctioneer said Tuesday that 150 lots will go under the hammer Dec. 15 in London, with a further 200 sold by online auction between Dec. 3 and Dec. 16.
The items include a red leather ministerial dispatch box, an award from Thatcher's friend and ally President Ronald Reagan, her 1951 wedding outfit and an Art Deco emerald and diamond necklace by Chaumet, valued at between 120,000 and 180,000 pounds ($185,000 and $277,000).
Branded "the Iron Lady" for her steely determination, Thatcher governed Britain between 1979 and 1990, transforming the country with her free-market policies.
Her practice of berating ministers and lawmakers became known as "handbagging."
Thatcher died in April 2013, aged 87, and the collection, valued at up to 500,000 pounds, is being sold by her family.
Some felt the collection should go on public display, and British media reported that London's Victoria and Albert Museum had turned it down.
The government's Business Secretary, Sajid Javid, tweeted: "Shame the V&A has turned down Thatcher's personal collection. I for one would have loved to see it!"
But the museum said it had never received a formal offer. It said that "several years ago, a general discussion took place to explore whether some pieces from the wardrobe of Baroness Thatcher might be added to the V&A's collection."
It said the conversations "did not develop" and "no formal offer was made for the museum to acquire the collection."

MARC JACOBS AND GUCCI ARE BRINGING RISK-TAKING BACK TO THE RED CARPET

With the help of their stylists, some of Hollywood's favorite fashion darlings are gravitating towards these two brands.

When it comes to red carpet dressing, there's definitely a tendency among celebrities and their stylists to go with options that are not great, not bad, but safe — as unlikely to make a worst dressed list as it is to be particularly memorable. Unsurprisingly, fashion fans are widely disappointed with this fact, but it seems as if Marc Jacobs and Gucci's Creative Director Alessandro Michele are set on changing things with their recent collections, both of which are filled with unique, show-stopping looks that are still wearable.
Both designers have gotten a healthy number of red carpet placements in recent weeks. Lady Gaga, Carey Mulligan, Rachel Weisz and, most recently, Sienna Miller, have all hit it out of the park with looks from Jacobs's spring 2016 collection since it walked last month. Meanwhile, Gucci dressed an impressive number of ladies this week, including Julia Roberts, Chloe Sevigny, Elle Fanning and Keira Knightley, most of whom are ideal brand ambassadors for Michele's quirky-romantic aesthetic. You'll remember that Fanning wore a look from the designer's fall 2015 collection in the September issue of Vogue, and that Knightley's stylist Leith Clark was going gaga over Michele's designs on Instagram during Milan Fashion Week.
See their looks, and the rest of this week's best dressed, in the gallery below.

How is Gucci's New Creative Director Freshening Up the Iconic Label?

Alessandro-Michele

Although he was only appointed creative director of Gucci earlier this year, Alessandro Michele is anything but a newcomer to the iconic luxury label. Working as part of the brand’s design team since 2002, Michele has an inherent understanding of Gucci’s delicate, covetable balance of heritage details, modern tailoring, opulent materials, and a healthy dose of self-assured sex appeal. For his first collection, Michele created pieces with a vintage feel—flowy ’70s-inspired flower patterned dresses, silk blouses tied at the neck with an unstructured, slender bow—but a sensibility that’s undeniably modern. Also included is a range of standout coats and neat trouser suits that are practical (particularly as extra-chic office wear) and ever-so-slightly androgynous without being excessively structured or serious. “I wanted to interpret an attitude, not a silhouette, through a perspective that blurs the masculine/feminine divide and champions the youthful energy and natural confidence of today’s urbanites,” Michele explains. That natural confidence applies to the collection’s accessories as well, with fabulously Rat Pack–inspired black flat loafers, sturdy thick belts, and boxy handbags with a hint of a Royal Tenenbaums–meets–Bianca Jagger vibe. Most are punctuated with exactly what you’d expect from this distinctive brand: bold trademark hardware, like chunky horse bits and oversize metal G’s, that looks as fresh now as its has for decades. The Forum Shops at Caesars, 702-369-7333; Via Bellagio, 702-732-9300; The Shops at Crystals, 702-730-1946

The 12th Annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Dinner

Photographed by Hannah Thomson
This year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund gala was an evening filled with firsts. From music mavens Lorde and Zendaya to models Constance Jablonski and Karlie Kloss, the tables at dinner at Spring Studios were stacked with top talent.
Lingering over cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres early in the evening were Dana Lorenz and her date, model Ophélie Guillermand, dressed in coordinating black and white suits—Guillermand’s was by Brandon Maxwell. “I always wear things that fade into the background, but with Ophélie, Brandon and I have been friends for a while and the look is perfect for the evening,” added Lorenz with a smile. Nearby, previous CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist Misha Nonoo linked arms with actress Meghan Markle. “Evidently, the chicken pot pie is something to write home about,” said Markle in a gilded extended hem blazer dress from Nonoo. Did the former finalist have anything to share with her newfound alums prior to the announcement of the winner? “Relax,” said the designer, adding, “when everybody says it’s okay, you’re fine just being a nominee, it’s really the truth. It’s what you make of it afterwards.”
That sentiment was shared by a slew of alumni who joined the festivities, including Tome’s Ramon Martin and Ryan Lobo, Eva Zuckerman, Ryan Roche, and last year’s winner, Paul Andrew. “It’s a passing of the torch,” laughed Andrew in a Dries Van Noten suit, adding, “I can only say run with it. Take every advantage of the fact that you have the world’s attention, because it may not happen again. It’s a really special thing. There’s so much support in this industry, in this country.” As guests including Lizzie Tisch, Marina Rust Connor, and Allison Sarofim sipped on bubbly with Zachary Quinto and Miles McMillan, others, including Zac Posen and his stunning date, Demi Moore, Ladyfag, and Toni Garrn peeked inside the next room to get a glimpse of the decor for dinner. From the blush dinner plates accented with nature motifs to the inviting nibbles on the table, the crowd clearly couldn’t wait for the meal to begin and the awards presentation to commence.
After Diane von Furstenberg thanked her fellow judges and the sponsors of the competition, including Uniqlo, Fossil, Neiman Marcus, and Amazon Fashion, she introduced Condé Nast Artistic Director and Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour. “You are a truly remarkable, lively, and independent group,” said Wintour of this year’s finalists, adding, “authentic is the word we have all kept coming back to best describe all of you.” And while the winner wasn’t immediately announced, Wintour then suggested that the designers listen to this year’s designer speaker, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy, who spoke in conversation with Vogue’s Hamish Bowles. Wintour went on to say, “We know from your Instagram account that you are never in one place for very long. All roads in pop culture seem to lead back to you, and for good reason. You are a designer perfectly suited to the age we live in. You are as connected to the worlds of music and art as you are to fashion and how they all enrich each other.”
After a brief introduction from actress Amanda Seyfried, one of Tisci’s “family,” he and Bowles talked about everything from the art of celebrity to his artistic approach to showing on September 11 in New York. Dubbing Marina Abramovic his “adopted mother,” the quiet designer spoke passionately about the need for staying connected and genuine through design. With the designer and celebrity filled crowd visibly moved, it was time for the winners to be announced. Or so everyone thought.
Enter singer Andra Day, who surprised everyone with a performance and got the chicly clad audience moving to her signature song “Rise Up.” Then, a brief film showing highlights from the competition over the past decade and featuring everyone from Alexander Wang to Rag & Bone’s Marcus Wainwright and David Neville cued the ten finalists that decision time was approaching.
As Seyfried and Tisci made their way to the podium, all of the designers composed themselves. They were then beaming at the news that there would not be a single victor, but rather three winners, who would each receive a prize of $300,000 and mentorship. Aurora James of Brother Vellies humbly thanked her family and said, “my mom was the first person to believe in me and told me that I could literally do anything I wanted to do.” She was followed by Rio Uribe of Gypsy Sport, who was also visibly choked up and said, “I’m sure it’s a cliché, but it really feels so surreal to talk to people who I’ve looked up to my entire life. It really says a lot about our world.” However, leave it to Jonathan Simkhai to end the evening on a lovely note, complimenting the audience. “You guys are all so beautiful,” opened the designer, adding, “never give up and follow your heart.” And on that sweet note, it was time for everyone to say goodbye and head out to the after-party.

On arguably the biggest night for American fashion’s emerging talent, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund has made a big decision: Rather than one winner and two runners-up, this year the selection committee decided to award three equal winners—Aurora James of footwear line Brother Vellies, Rio Uribe for streetwear label Gypsy Sport, and womenswear designer Jonathan Simkhai—to share the title, and to each receive $300,000 to invest in their respective labels, as well as a yearlong mentorship with an industry veteran to help take their business to the next level.

The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund has awarded over $4 million over the past 12 years in support of more than 30 onetime up-and-coming design companies, with previous winners and runners-up including the likes of Alexander Wang, Joseph Altuzarra, Tabitha Simmons, and Thom Browne. This is the first time in recent history that the prize will be shared between three designers, without a runner-up.
